"Unprosecutable Murder in the Death Zone ...AND a Few Other Geographical Quirks

There is a 50-square-mile radius in Yellowstone National Park that has been dubbed the “Zone of Death” by Michigan State law professor Brian Kalt.

Yes, I checked it out with Snopes.com (link below).

Professor Kalt discovered the (you guessed it) LOOPHOLE IN THE LAW in 2005.

He published a paper and circulated it around to several government agencies. Which didn't do anything about it.

If you're really curious...There's a novel about the snafu. There's a film.

The loophole exists because our Constitution's 6th Amendment says: “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed...”

But the “Zone of Death” is physically in Idaho...though it is under the federal jurisdiction of Wyoming. And it has no human residents.

Ergo, you can't GET that jury of the State and district wherein the crime was committed. Ergo... I assume... you'd get a free walk!

Some other geographical quirks:

Africa lies in all four hemispheres of the earth.

The Atlantic Ocean is saltier than the Pacific Ocean.

Reno, NV is west of Los Angeles, CA.

The Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal is farther East than the Atlantic entrance.

More than 40 buildings in Manhattan have their own zip codes-- they are that big.

The Sargasso Sea has no coastline.

Elko, NV is in the northeast quadrant of Nevada, but was part of the Los Angeles County Courts system for many years.

Maine is the closest U.S. state to Africa.
